The instructions below apply to OCS 2007 client for Windows. Mac users: read the knowledge base article on Getting Started With Communicator 2011 For Mac.

Intermedia offers three kinds of licenses for Office Communicator Server (OCS):

  • Standard
    Instant messaging, presence, and group chat functionality.
  • Enterprise
    The features of the Standard license, plus audio, video and web conferencing, and desktop sharing functionality. To learn more about desktop sharing via OCS read the Microsoft Knowledge Base article on: Using Desktop Sharing.
  • Enterprise Plus
    The features of the Enterprise license, plus voice telephony, and call management functionality.

Each OCS user can have a different license enabled.

To enable OCS for a user:

  1. Log into HostPilotĀ® Control Panel > Services > OCS 2007.
  2. Find the requested user in the list, choose the type of license and check the corresponding box.
  3. Click Proceed.
  4. Click Confirm.

Note: If OCS is enabled when creating a new user, by default, the Standard license is assigned to that user.

There are two options for setting up Microsoft Office Communicator on your local computer: 1. you can use the setup script, or 2. you can configure the client manually.

Using the setup script (recommended)

To set up the client using the setup script:

Download and run the .reg file. You can find the file by navigating to HostPilot > Services > OCS 2007. You can also find the .reg file in the Notification email that is sent to user once service is enabled.

Configuring Office Communicator manually

To set up the client manually: 

  1. Launch Microsoft Office Communicator.
  2. Open the menu in the top left and choose Connect > Change Sign-In Address.
  3. In Options, click the Advanced button. 
  4. Select Manual configuration.
  5. Specify the server name, which you can find by navigating to HostPilot > Services > OCS 2007.
  6. For Connect using, select TLS.
  7. Click OK.


  • Office Communicator will attempt to sync to your default Outlook profile. You can select which profile is the default profile by clicking on your Windows Start button and navigating to Control Panel > Mail > Show profiles.
    If you cannot locate the Mail icon within your Windows Control Panel, please try the following steps: 
    • On the left side of Windows Control Panel, select Classic View
    • If Mail still does not appear as an individual icon, look for it under Show 32-bit Control Panel Items.
  • You may need to install a patch to gain full functionality between Office Communicator and Outlook. If this is the case, a notification will be displayed in Office Communicator with a link to the necessary update from Microsoft.
