Note: Before installing SharePoint, you should consider whether or not you will need any of the following:

  • Both SharePoint and other ASP.NET applications
  • SharePoint for specific directories only, and not your Htdocs directory

If you need or are considering either of the above scenarios, review the additional information at the links under Advanced SharePoint 2003 Configuration at the end of this article. Please ensure that you are properly installed before you start putting considerable time into the customization and configuration of SharePoint. 

Quick Start Guide for SharePoint 2003

The information described below will cover a basic setup. If your setup will require either of the items above, we will provide more details on this at the end of the basic setup process.

The installation and configuration of SharePoint is a multi-step process consisting of:

  • Step 1. SharePoint installation
  • Step 2. Mail server configuration
  • Step 3. SharePoint configuration
  • Step 4. Adding users to the SharePoint site
  • Step 5. Enabling Anonymous access

Step 1. SharePoint installation.

To install SharePoint, log in to your HostPilot Control Panel and navigate to Web/FTP Server > Web Server > Website Tools > SharePoint Services > Install/Uninstall. You will be asked to enter the Administrator's email address before installing SharePoint. This address can be changed via the Administrative interface later if needed. When you are ready, click the Install SharePoint Services button to install SharePoint.

After installing SharePoint, the Install/Uninstall page in HostPilot should now have a list of configuration items for SharePoint.

Step 2. Mail server configuration.

To ensure that SharePoint can send email notifications, you should configure your mail server settings. Navigate to Virtual Server E-mail Settings. SharePoint should send mail from the address you chose when you installed SharePoint. However, you will need to fill in the following information on the Virtual Server E-mail Settings page:

Outbound SMTP server: scriptmail.intermedia.net
From and Reply-to addresses: Enter valid email addresses.

Note: Please make sure that "scriptmail.intermedia.net" relay conditions are met.

Step 3. SharePoint configuration.

Once you have configured SharePoint to send mail, you need to start the configuration via the Administrative login. Click Manage, and at the top of that page, you should find the URL to log in to SharePoint. Click on that URL, and you should be prompted for your username and password (this is done as a security precaution in order to allow you to configure your site before allowing anonymous access). Use your HostPilot username and password to log in. You should be prompted to select your template.

If this is the first SharePoint installation on your server, you may instead see the error below:

"Server Error in '/application name' Application"

If you receive this error, please contact Intermedia Technical Support, and provide them with your HostPilot user name, the URL to your SharePoint installation where you received this error, and let them know you have just installed SharePoint and are receiving this error. Intermedia Technical Support will need to reset the web services to resolve the error (it takes about 1 minute to complete this process), and you can then select your template.

You should now see your new SharePoint site.

Step 4. Adding users to the SharePoint site.

Now you are ready to start adding users to your SharePoint site. In order to add users to SharePoint, you need to first create users in HostPilot Control Panel > Web/FTP Server > Web Server > Site Users.

To add the newly created users to SharePoint:

  1. Log in to HostPilot Control Panel and navigate to Web/FTP Server > Web Server > Website Tools > SharePoint Services > Manage.
  2. Under Users and Permissions, click Manage users
  3. Click Add Users.
  4. In the Step 1 field, specify the name of each site user you have just created.
  5. In Step 2, choose an appropriate Site Group.
  6. Click Next.
  7. If necessary, specify an e-mail address.
  8. Click Finish.

Now the SharePoint users are ready.

Step 5. Enabling Anonymous access.

At this point, SharePoint is installed, users have been created, and you are ready to start customizing your content. SharePoint 2003 completely disables anonymous access on the backend when it is installed. If you want to give the anonymous user access to your site, you will need to complete the following two steps.

  1. First, you need to log in to HostPilot and navigate to Web/FTP Server > Web Server > Settings and Permissions. Select the /Htdocs folder, turn on Allow Anonymous Access, and click Save Changes.
  2. After you complete the first step, SharePoint files will continue to prompt for a password until you enable anonymous access to SharePoint in HostPilot > Web/FTP Server > Web Server > Website Tools > SharePoint Services > Manage. Select Users and Permissions > Manage Anonymous Access.
