Intermedia provides a VoIP Bandwidth Test tool designed to test the capacity of your current connection to support VoIP calls and to help troubleshoot VoIP connectivity issues. Read the Knowledge Base article on VoIP Connectivity Testing for more details about how to use the tool.
Once you run the test, the following steps will help you interpret the results:
- Navigate to the top left-hand tab with the flame icon. This is the Firewall test and it will show "Connection Successful" if your firewall is configured to support VoIP. If you see that port 5060 is blocked, please open this port in your firewall. You may need to contact your local network engineer or Internet Service Provider for assistance.
- Navigate to the Summary tab, which shows an overview of the tests that were run.
- Review the Speedtest: VoIP quality highly depends on the upload and download speed of your Internet connection.
- If you see green lights, you should have sufficient bandwidth to support a VoIP connection.
- If you see yellow or red lights for the speed tests:
- You may consider contacting your Internet Service Provider to increase your connection speed.
- Uploading/downloading large files over the same network as VoIP calls can affect quality. Pausing the upload/download of large files while making a call may improve call quality.
- Review the jitter, packet loss and Consistency of Servicetests:
- If you see green lights for these tests, your connection should have the stability to support a VoIP conversation.
- If you see yellow or red lights:
- WiFi connections are always less stable than Ethernet using a network cable. If you are on a WiFi connection, try connecting using an Ethernet cable and run the test again. If it shows better results, you may consider using Ethernet when making VoIP calls. You can also try to improve your WiFi signal by upgrading your router and/or access card, relocating your router so as to minimize walls and other structural interference, and avoiding printers, copiers, and other electrical devices.
- Prioritize VoIP traffic. Some routers prioritize VoIP traffic by default. On other routers, you can manually configure VoIP traffic to be prioritized over other Internet traffic. For Hosted PBX, you can find the server settings for prioritization in the HostPilot® Control Panel. Navigate to Users > Hosted PBX > Click on the User's Display Name.
