FrontPage 2002

The first step is to add any desired users to your web site (please see Creating Users).

The second step (optional) is to create sub-webs that you want to have restricted access to. This can be done only under your administrative login. If the location you want to protect is a pre-existing folder, you will need to convert that subfolder into a web. You can also restrict access to your [Root Web].

The third step only needs to be done if you want the permissions for your subwebs to be different from your [root web]. Go to "HostPilot Control Panel > Web/FTP Server > Web Server > Website Tools > FrontPage 2002 > Manage". Scroll down to the SUBWEBS section at the bottom and select the subweb you want to differ. An administration window will open for that subweb. In the USERS AND ROLES section for that subweb, select "Change subweb permissions". Select "Use unique permissions for this Web site" and press "Submit". PLEASE NOTE that you will not be able to access the administrative area for this subweb for a short while, as FrontPage is updating this information.

The fourth (and final) step is to log into the management page for the [root web] or subweb that you want to restrict. Select "Manage Users" and make sure that your users are set up correctly. When you are ready, go back to the management page and select "Change Anonymous Access Settings". Select "OFF" and press "Submit".

Now only the users that you add to your web or subweb using Site Management will be able to browse your web.

FrontPage 2000

The first step is to add desired users to your virtual server (see Protecting Directories). Select NONE in Path list box. Leave FTP Read and Write unmarked.

The second step (optional) is to create sub-webs that you want to have restricted access to. This can be done only under your administrative login. You can also restrict access to your [Root Web].

The third (and the last) step is to login to the sub-web or [Root Web] using FrontPage Explorer. Then, select Permissions under Tools menu. If you are working with a sub-web, select "Use unique permissions for this web" in Permissions dialog box, click apply. Then, go to "Users" tab and select "Only registered users have browse access", click Ok. Click Ok in the permissions dialog.

If you add restrict access, or add authors or administrators to your sub-webs, you need to add these users to your [Root Web] with Browse access using Permissions in Tools menu for the [Root Web].

This is it, now only the users that you added to your site using Site Users Management will be able to browse your web.
