Cloud server storage can be upgraded at any time. As a best practice, volatile and non-volatile data should be separated across multiple disks. For instance, C:\ for System Files and D:\ for Data files.

To add storage to Cloud Server you need to do the following:

  1. Create Storage in HostPilotĀ® Control Panel
  2. Manage disk space on a server

To add Storage to your Cloud within HostPilotĀ® Control Panel > Services > Cloud Servers:

  1. Choose Modify Server for your Cloud Server.
  2. Under the Add-on column, find the SAN Storage parameter and change the selection.
  3. There will be a new row for the Unallocated Space that needs to be applied to a Disk.
  4. You will now want to assign the Unallocated Space to a disk. Under Add-on column, find the Disk parameter, and change the selection to match new total Storage amount.
  5. You can now click the Modify Current Configuration button to save changes. The server will be shutdown and the new configuration will be applied to the server.

To manage your storage on the Cloud server: 

Windows 2008/2012

managing partitions

  1. Log in to the Cloud server via Remote Desktop.
  2. Go to Server Manager > Disk Management.
  3. If you upgraded storage on an existing disk, you can expand the existing partition by simply choosing Extend Partition from the right-click menu.
  4. If you added a new Disk, right-click on it and set it Online. Then you will need to Initialize the disk. Once it is online, the Initialize Disk dialog box will appear. When it is completed, you can format the disk within the console.

Linux

  1. Download GParted Live CD image (the file looks like gparted-live-0.16.2-1b-i486.iso) to your computer.
  2. Open VMRC (HostPilot > Services > Cloud Server > click Open Console) and mount the image by specifying the full path to a file. Restart the server > click F2 during boot to open BIOS and move CD-ROM to the top of the boot list.

  3. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  4. The server should now boot to the GParted Live boot screen. Press Enter. You may see options regarding keymaps. Select your language ([33] English) to proceed.
  5. GParted will configure itself and may take a few moments to reach the Gnome desktop. Once you see the desktop, GParted will be launched automatically.
  6. You will now need to move the partition, e.g. /dev/sda2, (including the Swap Partition, e. g. /dev/sda5) to the end of the disk. This will allow the primary disk to be expanded into the unallocated space. Right-click on /dev/sda2 and choose Resize/Move.
  7. Change the Free space following from whatever it is (e.g 86017) to 0. Click Resize/Move button.
  8. You can now move the Swap partition to the end of the /dev/sda2 partition. Right-click on /dev/sda5 and choose Resize/Move.
  9. Change the Free space following to 0. You should see Free space preseding increase. Click Resize/Move button. You may see a warning, this is expected.
  10. Reduce the size of /dev/sda2 to fit only the Swap Partition (e.g. 715 MB)
  11. Now that the Unallocated space directly follows /dev/sda1, we can expand it to use the unallocated space. Right-click on /dev/sda1 and choose Resize/Move.
  12. Either drag or change the New size to the Maximum size. Click Resize/Move button.
  13. You can now click Apply to save all the changes. This will go through each of the steps and Resize/Move the partitions.
