This article describes how to enable Audio and Video Playback Redirection on the Cloud Server.

For Windows 2003 Server:

  1. Enable the service:
    1. Click Start > Run, type services.msc, and click OK
    2. Change the Windows Audio service to Automatic and start the service.
  2. Enable the redirection:
    1. Navigato to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrator Tools.
    2. Click Terminal Services Configuration.
    3. Double-click RDP-Tcp.
    4. Select Client Settings tab.
    5. Deselect Audio Mapping.
  3. Configure RD Session Host
    1. Launch Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration
    2. Under Connection, right-click on RDP-Tcp and select Properties
    3. Choose Client Settings tab
    4. Uncheck the Audio Mapping checkbox.
      Note: All the checkboxes under this section are below the Disable the following; therefore, anything that is checked is disabled.
    5. Click OK and close the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration. A warning may appear that alerts you to these changes not taking affect for current sessions.

For Windows 2008 R2 Server:

  1. Enable the Audio Service:
    1. Launch Server Manager
    2. Expand Configuration > Services.
    3. Change the Windows Audio service to Automatic and start the service.
    4. Exit Server Manager.
  2. Enable the Policy:
    1. Click Start > Run, type mmc, and click OK.
    2. Add the Group Policy Object Editor snap-in (File > Add/Remove Snap-in).
    3. Expand Local Computer Policy.
    4. Expand Computer Configuration.
    5. Expand Administrative Templates.
    6. Expand Windows Components.
    7. Expand Remote Desktop Services.
    8. Expand Remote Desktop Session Host.
    9. Expand Device and Resources Redirection.
  3. Configure RD Session Host
    1. Launch Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration
    2. Under Connection, right-click on RDP-Tcp and select Properties:

    3. Choose Client Settings tab
    4. Make sure that Audio and video playback box is unchecked.
      Note: All the checkboxes under this section are below the Disable the following; therefore, anything that is checked is disabled.

    5. Click OK and close the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration. A warning may appear that alerts you to these changes not taking affect for current sessions.
    6. Log out and back in of your Remote Desktop Session
    7. Edit Allow Audio and Video Playback Redirection and set it to Enabled.

    8. Restart the server.

Note: Windows 2008 may require the policy to be set in User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Terminal Services.

Some applications may need to be configured for Audio Redirection specifically. One example is Windows Media Player. If you or your users install and wish to use WMP, here are steps to configure it for Remote Audio.

To configure Media Player:

  1. Launch Media Player on the server
  2. Right click the title bar, selecting Tools > Options:
    Tools Options
  3. Click the Devices tab
  4. Double-click Speakers
  5. Ensure that Remote Audio is selected in the Audio device to use: box.

  6. Click OK > OK
  7. Close Windows Media Player
  8. If Windows Media Player isn't a default player, start it again; otherwise, double-click a WAV file. About 6 seconds after double-click, you should hear the sound throght your speaker or headphones, assuming all was done correctly.
