Overview

This article explains the functionality of Account-to-Account Federations.

Federation is a functionality which allows Intermedia Unite Users to communicate with others Intermedia Unite Users outside their Account (organization).

Once Accounts are federated, end-users can chat, call (10 digit dialing only), share files and have meetings between the federated Accounts using their Intermedia Unite Mobile and Desktop Applications.

Why is it useful

Account-to-Account Federation is useful in the following cases:

  1. A Company purchases several Accounts because of some limitations (legal, geo, etc.) and need them to communicate to each other;
  2. Two Accounts working closely want to share the list of contacts between each other.

Federation is a special configuration between 2 or more Accounts which allows Users belonging to each of those Accounts to better communicate with each other:

  • locate Users (using Search);
  • call (10-digit dialing only)
    Note:
     Extension dialing is not supported across federated Accounts
  • chat in 1:1 chats or channels;
  • run scheduled and channel meetings;
  • view each other's presence and status messages.

Note: A single Federation should not include more than 10 Accounts. However, one Account can be part of many Federations.

Important: The Federation can be created only all-to-all at this point, which means all users from one Account can see all users from another Account.

How it works

Once a Federation is created, Users will be able to search for Users from the federated Accounts in Chat tab, Calling tab, chat/channel creation interfaces.

Note:

  • Federated Users will appear at the same level of search as regular Users;

  • Contact card of a federated User will have a note that this User is from a federated Account;
  • Users from federated channels can see all important information about each other in Contacts' Contact Cards, including presence, additional presence status, email, and phone numbers;

  • Federated Users can call each other using a Contact Card, Calling tab, Call History tab, Voicemail tab - phone numbers assigned to the federated Contacts will be resolved everywhere Users can see them within the Intermedia Unite Mobile and Desktop Apps;
  • Federated Users can initiate 1:1 online meetings using Meet now button in Intermedia Unite Mobile and Desktop Apps as well as join scheduled/spontaneous meetings initiated in the channel/chat federated Users are part of;

  • Federated Users can have 1:1 chats between each other and participate in both new and existing channels despite the fact where Users or channels were created originally;
    Note: Users from one channels cannot find public federated channels in their search, so to participate in them, they must be invited explicitly by one of the channel members;

  • If new Users were added to an Account into a Federation, they will automatically appear for all Accounts in the Federation.

How to manage Account-to-Account Federation

To enable/manage an Account-to-Account Federation, please reach out to Support team and follow the steps listed in this section of the Article.
Note: In the meanwhile, there is no respective functionality presented in $controlpanel.

You can send a request to Support team to:

  • create a Federation:
    • provide an explicit confirmation (written or verbal) that you understand what the Federation does - all users will see all users - and agree to proceed;
    • provide a written/verbal consent from both Accounts that want to be federated;
    • list Account IDs to be federated;
    • within 24 hours the Federation will be created.
  • add more accounts into a Federation:
    • provide an explicit confirmation (written or verbal) that you understand what the Federation does - all users will see all users - and agree to proceed;
    • provide a written/verbal consent from all Accounts that want to be federated;
    • list Account IDs of accounts who are already in the Federation;
    • list Account ID of accounts to be added into Federation;
    • within 24 hours the Federation will be created.
  • remove accounts from a Federation:
    • provide a written/verbal request to have an Account removed from a Federation;
    • Important: Please note that you should manually remove federated Users form channels - provide written/verbal acknowledgement of that fact or inform that it's done;
    • list Account IDs of accounts who are already in the Federation;
    • list Account ID of accounts want to leave the Federation;
    • within 24 hours the Federation will be updated.
  • remove a Federation:
    • provide a written/verbal request to have a Federation removed;
    • Important: Please note that you should manually remove federated Users form channels - provide written/verbal acknowledgement of that fact or inform that it's done;
    • list Account IDs of accounts who already in the Federation;
    • list Account ID of accounts want to leave the Federation;
    • within 24 hours the Federation will be removed.

ImportantIn order to delete a Federation, customer must remove all the Users from federated channels manually. If this is not done, Users from another Account still will be able to read and write in the channels, but instead of the names other Users will see UNKNOWN USER.
There is no need to do something specific for 1:1 chats, they will disappear from the clients when a Federation is removed.
